Identifying your Triggers

This identifying triggers worksheet helps you spot the people, places, feelings, and situations that come right before strong reactions or urges, so you can see them coming instead of getting caught off guard.

What triggers are

A trigger is anything that sets off a strong emotional reaction or urge before you have consciously decided anything: a person, a place, a time of day, a feeling, a memory. One minute you are fine; the next you are furious, panicked, shut down, or craving something, and it is not always obvious why. Triggers are not a sign of weakness. They are learned associations your brain built to protect you, and they fire fast. The goal is not to have zero triggers. It is to know yours well enough that they stop running the show.

How to find yours

The clearest way to find your triggers is to work backward. Start from a recent moment when your emotions spiked or an urge hit hard, and rewind the tape: what happened in the hour before? Who was there? What were you feeling in your body? Do this for a few different moments and patterns start to appear. Your body often knows before your mind does; a tight jaw or a restless evening can be the first clue. If your triggers connect to substance use or to thoughts of hurting yourself, bring this worksheet to a clinician so you can plan together. In a crisis in the US, call or text 988.
