Be a Feelings Detective

Think: How would I feel if I were them? Listen: What words are being spoken? How does their voice sound? Look: What does their face look like? What is their body doing? How are they acting?

Think about their point of view

What might this person be feeling? What may have happened before this moment? List more than one possibility before deciding.

Listen and look for clues

Notice their words, tone of voice, facial expression, posture, and actions. Which clues support your guess?

Check your detective work

A clue is not proof. Ask kindly when you can: “You seem quieter than usual. How are you feeling?” Listen to the answer and update your guess instead of assuming you already know.
