Personal Strengths

Work through a list of strengths to find the ones that fit you best, back them up with real-life evidence, and plan a new way to use a top strength this week.

Why look for strengths?

Most people can list their flaws in seconds and go quiet when asked what they are good at. That is not modesty. The mind simply gives problems more airtime than strengths, so your weaknesses feel familiar while your strengths go unnamed. People who can name their character strengths, and find regular ways to use them, tend to feel more energized, more confident, and more engaged in daily life. Naming yours is the first step toward using them on purpose.

How to spot a real strength

A genuine strength usually has three markers: it comes naturally, it energizes you rather than drains you, and other people notice it in you. A skill you perform well but dread using does not count in the same way. As you read the list below, watch for words that call up specific moments: times you lost track of time, felt most like yourself, or heard someone say that is so you.

Check the strengths that sound like you

Go through this list of strengths and check every one that fits, even a little. You can narrow down later; for now, be generous with yourself.

Gather your evidence

Choose your top three strengths from the list. For each one, describe a recent, specific time you used it: what was happening, what you did, and what came of it. Concrete examples turn a nice-sounding word into something you can actually trust.

Name your signature strength

Of your top three, which one feels closest to the core of who you are, the one you would miss most if you could never use it again?

How often do you get to use it?

Use a top strength in a new way

Pick one place this week, at home, at work, or in a friendship, where you could use your signature strength in a way you have not tried before. If you scored low on the last question, this is your chance to raise the number. Small and specific beats big and vague.
