Coping Skills for Depression
A menu of realistic, low-energy coping skills for depression, plus a tiny-steps plan that meets you where you are instead of where you think you should be.
Why coping with depression looks different
Depression drains the same energy you would normally use to help yourself. That is why well-meaning advice to exercise more or get out of the house can feel impossible, and why the not-doing quickly becomes one more thing to feel bad about. This is not a willpower problem. It is how depression works. The skills in this worksheet are built for low-energy days. Each one can be shrunk until it is almost too easy, because a tiny step you actually take helps more than a perfect plan you never start.
Four ways in
Coping skills for depression tend to work through one of four doors: behavior (doing one small thing), connection (letting one person in), body (tending to basic physical needs), and thoughts (talking to yourself like someone worth defending). You do not need all four at once. On a hard day, opening any single door a crack tends to loosen the others.
Where is your energy right now?
Rate your energy before choosing a skill. Low numbers are not failure; they are information that tells you how small to make your step.
Your skills menu
Check the skills you would be willing to try on a low day. Willing matters more than enthusiastic.
Pick one skill and shrink it
Choose one item you checked and cut it down until it feels almost too easy. If it still feels heavy, cut it in half again.
Give it a time and an anchor
Tiny steps happen when they are attached to something you already do every day.
When coping skills are not enough
Skills like these are real help, but they are not meant to carry everything. If your mood keeps sliding, or you are having thoughts of hurting yourself, that deserves professional support rather than more self-help. In the US, you can call or text 988 anytime to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
