Wise Mind
Learn the three DBT states of mind, recognize which one is leading in a difficult moment, and practice finding the balanced response of Wise Mind.
Three states of mind
DBT describes three ways the mind can guide us. Emotion Mind is led by feelings, urges, and the intensity of the moment. Reasonable Mind is led by facts, plans, and logic. Wise Mind brings both together. It notices the emotion and the facts, then chooses what fits your values and the situation. Wise Mind does not mean ignoring feelings or becoming perfectly calm. It means making room for what you feel without letting the feeling make every decision.
How each state shows up for you
Check the signs you recognize. You may notice more than one state at the same time.
A recent difficult moment
Describe one situation where Emotion Mind or Reasonable Mind took over. What happened, what did you feel, and what did you do next?
Emotion Mind says
Write the urgent feeling, fear, or impulse that shows up in this situation.
Reasonable Mind says
Write the facts, practical needs, and logical view of the same situation.
Wise Mind says
Hold both answers together. What response respects the emotion, fits the facts, and moves you toward what matters?
How connected are you to Wise Mind?
