Socratic Questioning

Use Socratic questioning to examine a belief that feels heavy or automatic - weighing the evidence, trying on other perspectives, and noticing what shifts.

What is Socratic questioning?

Socratic questioning is a core CBT skill for examining a belief with curiosity instead of arguing with it. Rather than telling yourself a thought is wrong, you ask it careful questions: What is the evidence? Are there other ways to see this? Where did this idea come from, and where does it lead? Beliefs often feel true because they are familiar, not because they have been examined. Questioning a belief does not mean forcing yourself to think positively. It means slowing down and looking at the whole picture, so your conclusion rests on evidence rather than habit.

The belief you want to examine

Choose one belief that feels heavy, absolute, or automatic. Write it as a single clear sentence.

How convinced are you right now?

Before you start questioning, rate how true this belief feels in this moment.

Choose your questions

Good questions open doors. Check the ones you want to sit with as you work through this belief.

Weigh the evidence

List the facts that genuinely support the belief, then the facts that don't fit it. Stick to things a camera could record - events, outcomes, what was actually said - rather than interpretations.

Try on other perspectives

Step outside your own vantage point for a moment. How might someone who cares about you describe this same situation? What would you say to a friend who held this exact belief? Is there a reading of the facts that is kinder - and still honest?

Where it came from, where it leads

Beliefs have histories and consequences. Write a few lines about when this belief first took hold and what experiences fed it. Then write what happens when you treat it as absolute truth - what you avoid, what you carry, how you speak to yourself.

Re-rate your conviction

Read the belief again, exactly as you wrote it. How convinced are you now? Any movement counts - and no movement is useful information too.

What did you notice?

Look back over your answers. What stood out? If your conviction shifted, which question made the difference? Name one situation this week where you could pause and ask that question again.
