Anxiety Coping Skills
Build a personal toolkit of anxiety coping skills, with body-based, thought-based, and action-based strategies you can match to the moment.
Why one skill is never enough
Anxiety shows up differently depending on the day. Sometimes it is a racing heart before a meeting, sometimes a spiral of what-ifs at 2 a.m., and sometimes a restless urge to cancel everything. One coping skill cannot cover all of that. This worksheet helps you build a small toolkit: a handful of skills you have actually tried, matched to the ways your anxiety shows up. When your options are written down ahead of time, you do not have to invent a plan in the middle of a hard moment.
Three kinds of coping skills
Body-based skills calm the physical alarm first. They work directly on your breath, muscles, and nervous system, and they are often the fastest way to take the edge off high anxiety. Thought-based skills help you step back from anxious thinking. They do not force positive thinking; they help you look at the thought instead of from it. Action-based skills change what you are doing. Anxiety shrinks when you keep moving toward your life instead of pausing it, even in small ways.
Rate your anxiety right now
Before trying anything, notice where you are. Rating your anxiety before and after using a skill is the quickest way to learn what actually works for you.
Your early warning signs
Where does anxiety show up first for you? Naming your earliest signals helps you reach for a skill sooner, when it is easier to change course.
Body-based skills
Check any you would be willing to try this week.
Thought-based skills
Check any that fit the way your mind works.
Action-based skills
Anxiety loves a paused life. Check the actions you could take even while anxious.
Your pick-three plan
Choose one skill from each list above. For each one, write when and where you will practice it this week. Practicing while calm builds the muscle you will need under pressure.
