Protective Factors

Protective factors are the connections, routines, skills, and supports that steady you when life gets heavy. Map yours, then pick one to strengthen this month.

What holds you steady

Protective factors are the parts of your life that hold you steady when things get heavy: people who care whether you show up, routines that keep your body running, skills you can lean on, beliefs and commitments that give your days weight, and care you can reach when you need it. Risk gets most of the attention, but protection is something you can actually build. This worksheet maps what you already have and helps you strengthen one piece this month. It works best alongside a therapist or counselor, and it supports their care; it never replaces it.

Before you start

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. In the US, you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any hour of any day; it is free and confidential. This worksheet is for building during steadier times. If you are in the middle of a crisis right now, reach out first, and come back to this page once the wave has passed.

Connections that steady me

People are the strongest protection most of us have. Check what is already in your life, even in small form.

Meaning and reasons

Meaning is quiet but heavy-duty protection: the people, commitments, beliefs, and curiosities that make your days matter. Write what gives your life weight right now, and what you would still like to see, finish, or become.

Routines and skills that hold me up

Steady routines protect your mood the way sleep protects your immune system: quietly, until they go missing. Check what is currently in place, even imperfectly.

My access to care

Care counts as protection too. Who is on your team, and how would you reach them? Include a therapist or counselor, a doctor, a school or work support, and save 988 in your phone while you are here.

How sturdy does it all feel this month?

Looking at everything you just mapped, rate how supported your life feels right now. There is no score to pass; this is a snapshot that shows you where to invest.

Choose one factor to strengthen

Pick a single protective factor to grow this month. One is enough; small and real beats big and imaginary.

Your one-month plan

Write the smallest first step you can take this week, when you will take it, and who could help or keep you company. Then note anything you noticed while mapping your protection: surprises, gaps, or strengths you had stopped counting.
