Circle of Control
Use the circle of control to sort your worries into what you can control, what you can influence, and what you need to release, so your energy goes where it counts.
Three circles
Picture three circles, one inside the next. The small inner circle holds what you fully control: your actions, your words, your effort, where your attention goes. The middle ring holds what you can influence but not decide, like other people's choices and outcomes you can prepare for. The outer ring holds what is out of your hands entirely: the past, other people's opinions, the news, the weather. Stress has a way of blurring these circles together, so that everything feels equally urgent and equally yours to fix.
Sorting is not giving up
Placing something in the outer ring does not mean you stop caring about it. It means you stop spending energy where it cannot buy you anything. Every hour of worry aimed at the outer ring is an hour taken from the inner circle, where your effort actually changes things. Sorting your worries is how you get that energy back.
Empty your head
List everything that is weighing on you right now, big and small, in any order. Do not sort yet; just get it out.
Inner circle: what you control
Go back through your list. Pull out anything that is fully yours: choices, habits, effort, boundaries, how you respond. Write those here.
Middle ring: what you influence
Now pull out the things you can affect but cannot decide alone. For each one, note the part that is yours: the ask, the preparation, the follow-up.
Outer ring: what you cannot control
Finally, write down what is truly out of your hands. Be honest here; this ring is usually bigger than we want it to be.
Ways to release the outer ring
You cannot delete these worries, but you can loosen your grip on them. Check two or three practices you will try when an outer-ring worry shows up.
Your next inner-circle move
Choose one thing from your inner circle and commit to a small, concrete step in the next two days. Action inside your control is the fastest antidote to helplessness.
Reflect
After a few days of sorting your worries this way, notice what has shifted.
